Teshuvah means “return.” Traditionally, it is the central challenge for Jewish people in Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah. It involves self-examination (heshbon hanefesh), forgiving ourselves and others (selikhot), seeking help (bakashot) and a plan for cultivating new behaviors (middot). There is teshuvah to be done with ourselves, with other people and with the Blessed Holy One.

In our three meetings, we will explore traditional and contemporary texts that address each of the aspects of the teshuvah process, will engage in a few experiential teshuvah practices, and will journal—writing our way toward return and restoration.

Rabbi Jacob Staub is Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Spirituality at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where he directs the program in Jewish Spiritual Direction and co-directs Bekhol Derakhekha Da’ehu (Know God in All Your Ways), a training for Jewish spiritual directors.
