The Role of Text Study in Congregational Values-Based Decision Making
In order to develop values-based policies and procedures for our communities, we need to take a few steps back from the more practical concerns and examine our communal principles and Jewish ethical values and teachings. We must first clarify our terms, examine our preexisting attitudes, and understand how our experiences impact the decisions we make in community.

Making Decisions on Controversial Issues
Every congregation (or havurah) faces disagreements, in which particular individuals or sub-groups feel compelled to challenge the status quo. While these disputes are often resolved amicably, they can also result in individuals feeling a need to leave the group, or in some instances, a group of individuals feeling a need to start a new group based on the point of conflict. None of these results is necessarily bad or wrong. But there are times when such disagreements create a negative atmosphere and hurt feelings that never heal.

Plenum
What Is the Plenum?
The plenum of the Reconstructionist movement is a group of representatives from each affiliated congregation and havurah who discuss and share the issues of the day, both internal movement discussions and thoughts on the movement’s relationship to the world. In order to foster that kind of discussion, the goal is to create a stable group, where representatives stay engaged with the plenum for a couple of years or more.

Synagogue Membership As a Requirement For Religious School Enrollment
This listserv thread from November 2001 still contains valuable discussion on congregational policy.
Jeff Steinberg, Toronto, Ontario
I sit on our Hebrew school committee, which is currently reviewing a policy of the congregation. The policy requires congregational membership after one year's enrollment in the school. The school, in effect, serves a membership gathering function.

Building the Jewish Future
My rabbinical career has been anything but planned. I would be a career counselor’s worst nightmare: the conventional ladder of professional advancement has never suited me. Instead, I’ve tried to think boldly about what the Jewish community needs, and have done my best to build institutions that could address those needs.
