  1. Marriage Equality and Religious Freedom

On a recent evening in Scarsdale, N.Y., I was at the Mid-Westchester JCC, speaking on a panel to a packed and spirited room. We’d been invited to discuss marriage equality and Jewish values, and the tone was certainly celebratory. We acknowledged we have farther to go, but in light of the Supreme Court’s decision last year on gay marriage, we’ve certainly come a long way.

  3. Zionism and Communal Covenant

In 2004, the JRF Israel Policies Task Force issued a report calling for a recommitment to Zionism. This excerpt from that report explores Kaplan's definition of “New Zionism.” It also discusses how a communal covenant could strengthen the relationships among the Reconstructionist community, Israel and the broader Jewish community.

  6. Kotel release Feb 2016

The Reconstructionist movement is overjoyed that on Jan 31, 2016, the Israeli cabinet voted to dramatically expand the space for egalitarian prayer at the Kotel. This is a blessed and welcome decision. The Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City is a central and highly symbolic Jewish space. For many Jews, this is an historic moment, because an egalitarian community of men and women is essential to their religious obligations, needs and desires.

Israel’s Declaration of Independence, read and signed on the evening of May 14, 1948, begins with the story of Jewish persecution and homelessness. Then it proclaims the principles on which the country will be established.

  8. PJI: Flight to Tel Aviv

Each time I get ready to travel to Israel, I make sure that my hair dryer will be able to function using Israeli electricity. I need to turn a small switch so that it can be usable in Israel. The computer and other such smart appliances do not need to switch. They only need an adapter to change the shape of the plug. They know what to do.When I travel to Israel, I also switch my life to a different mode. The long flight and the immigration laws of both countries are the “adapter” I use. When I leave the USA I am an American and I use my American passport.
