  2. Keeping Judaism Alive Behind Prison Walls

In loyalty, you sustain the living, nurturing the life of everything, healing the sick, freeing the captive.

Jessica Rosenberg, a senior at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in suburban Philadelphia, has often been inspired and troubled by these words of gratitude in the daily morning prayers. What does it mean that God frees the captive and heals the sick, knowing some people never achieve freedom or recover from certain illnesses? Does it mean that God only delivers some people and not others? Or should the words be interpreted metaphorically?

  3. Joint Statement on Abbas Speech

Reconstructing Judaism and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association strongly condemn the recent public remarks made by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Denying the legitimacy of the historic and religious connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, Abbas claimed that the Zionist movement was a European colonial plot having nothing to do with Judaism or with the true desires of Jews facing peril during and after World War II.

  4. Metoo Exponent Article

Sexual harassment of women in many professions has gained intense public scrutiny in recent weeks. Women rabbis are among those affected — and their position as religious leaders sometimes makes them particular targets. In a January 24th article in the Jewish Exponent, Barbara Breitman, assistant professor of pastoral counseling at RRC, sheds light on the phenomenon. “When the power invested in a rabbi is embodied by a woman, some people are still very uncomfortable with that and behave in ways that, consciously or unconsciously, are efforts to reduce their power.

  5. Renaming - About Our New Name

(The following op-ed was originally posted by the JTA at this link.)

“I don’t know any Jews who go to temple.”

The line is from a remarkably poignant scene in the 2004 film “Garden State,” in which Zach Braff’s character explains to his love interest, played by Natalie Portman, a few things that most non-Orthodox American Jews know about large suburban synagogues.

  8. Jewish Support for Dreamers: A Self-Evident Truth

Why did more than 100 Jewish leaders from around the country participate last month in act of civil disobedience in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building?

Why were 86 rabbis arrested, some handcuffed and carried off while still wearing their prayer shawls? And why do we, leaders of the Reconstructionist denomination of Judaism, spend so much time and social capital advocating on behalf of the roughly 800,000 Dreamers at risk of deportation. In case you didn’t know, very few of the Dreamers are Jews.
