  1. Seth leadership column May 2018

Part of my “elevator speech” answer to the question “What is Reconstructionist Judaism?” has been the familiar, almost catchphrase: “Reconstructionists believe that Judaism is the evolving civilization of the Jewish people.” On a really short elevator ride, that could be the entire speech, leaving the person who asked the question slightly puzzled and really no better informed than they were when we left the lobby.

  2. Condolence message - Aaron Pankin

The leadership of Reconstructing Judaism and especially the faculty and students of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College express condolences to the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion community and the entire Reform movement on the tragic death of Rabbi Aaron Panken, Ph.D., 12th president of HUC-JIR. Aaron was a visionary leader, a thoughtful scholar, a generous colleague and a mensch. His ties to the Reconstructionist movement were both collegial and familial and his loss feels personal and painful.

  4. The Aviv Loan Fund Helps Synagogues and Havurot Spring Into Growth

Several years ago, Kadima Reconstructionist Community in Seattle had fewer than 30 member households. Today, the 37-year-old community with a focus on social justice boasts more than 200 adult members, including millennials and young families.

What accounts for this remarkable turnaround? A number of factors.

  5. What is Social Entrepreneurship - Edgeblog

I teach rabbinical students to be entrepreneurs. Often, people respond, “Really, you teach rabbis how to make money?” Feigning patience, I explain that tackling the finances of any project is critical, but the tools I teach rabbis help them rack up solutions that impact the quality of people’s lives, not the big bucks. The proper term for my course is social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship means applying a business-like discipline to creating solutions to social justice, cultural and environmental issues.

  8. Joint Statement on Immigration

The leadership of Reconstructing Judaism and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association condemn with horror the travesty that has become our immigration system under the administration of U.S. President Donald J. Trump. The “zero tolerance” policy that first saw young children ripped away from their parents as they attempted to seek asylum and safety in the United States—and now is holding families locked up in detention—is immoral and a disgrace to the American and Jewish values we hold dear.

  9. Reconstructionist Communities Make Disability Inclusion a Top Priority

  10. July Leadership Column

I frequently describe myself as an evangelist for progressive religion. I spend much of my time making the case for why folks should belong. Why belong to any religion? Why belong to the Jewish people? Why belong to a synagogue? Why belong to the Reconstructionist movement?
