Deborah April Column
What does a thriving synagogue look like? I was recently asked to be on a panel at a conference on this topic. To prepare, I sat down — in true Reconstructionist style —with Seth Rosen, the chair of our board of governors; Tresa Grauer, who was recently promoted to become vice president for thriving communities; and almost-rabbi Micah Weiss, who will graduate from RRC in June, and just started working with us as assistant director of the Thriving Communities department and tikkun olam specialist.

Post About Welcome Poster
Dear friends across the Reconstructionist movement,
These are challenging and uncertain times. One of the things we’ve been hearing a lot from lay leaders and rabbis in many of our communities is the desire to reaffirm and strengthen our shared Jewish values of diversity, inclusion, respect, and welcoming. During the recent meeting of the Plenum, for example, some participants spoke about their congregations’ desire to stand up to bigotry and intimidation in light of the recent increase in acts of hate against various minority communities, including our own.

Why We Have to Talk About It
When I was growing up, it was common to hear and see religious leaders whose faith compelled them to stand up in the public square to join the struggle for peace and social justice. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Phillip and Daniel Berrigan, Father Robert Drinan and Father Francis P. Duffy, Rev. William Sloane Coffin and the Catholic nuns and other religious figures who marched with Dr.

Rabbi Elliott Tepperman: Bringing a Community-Organizing Model to the Pulpit
Having spent her career in journalism and Jewish communal service, working for organizations such as Hadassah and HIAS, Roberta Elliott was always deeply engaged with her Jewish identity and the wider world. Before 2006, as she tells it, direct social action hadn’t been a major focus of her life.
Then she joined Bnai Keshet, a Reconstructionist synagogue in Montclair, N.J., and soon all that would change.

Statement on Shooting at Chabad of Poway
Reconstructing Judaism and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association send our deepest condolences and wishes of refu’ah shlaymah — full and complete healing — to all who were affected by the shooting at Chabad of Poway, Calif. We are keenly aware that the shooting happened not only on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, and the eighth day of Passover, the Jewish celebration of liberation from oppression, but also on the sixth month anniversary of the terrible shooting in Pittsburgh.
