Greetings Edtalkers,
This is Vicki from B'nai Havurah in Denver, Colorado. I am on the Children's High Holiday Programming committee. I have been involved with this committee on and off for about the last 8 years. Toddlers Turn On to Torah
How can you delight two- and three-year-olds with chanting Torah in ancient melodies called trope? How do you pull them into the storyline, and get them to call out questions and jump out of their seats at the end of each section to shout Hazak! Hazak! Venithazek! (Be strong! Be strong! And may we be strengthened), as if it were a chorus from the latest Disney blockbuster? Rabbi Marisa Elana James did just that as a rabbinical student during her year as director of programming at a congregation in New York City.

Synagogue Membership As a Requirement For Religious School Enrollment
This listserv thread from November 2001 still contains valuable discussion on congregational policy.
Jeff Steinberg, Toronto, Ontario
I sit on our Hebrew school committee, which is currently reviewing a policy of the congregation. The policy requires congregational membership after one year's enrollment in the school. The school, in effect, serves a membership gathering function.

Education at University Synagogue
Students in our community at University Synagogue in southern California have experienced a substantial amount of tragedy over the past year, including hate crimes and gun violence. As more and more places of worship become vulnerable and we increase security measures, we must be aware of how our students respond, especially as it becomes more difficult to shield young people from the news.
