Fundraising Tips
General Fundraising
- Fundraising should be “soul raising.” It should teach people about Reconstructionism and make people more knowledgeable Jewishly, as well as raise money.
- Make small givers feel as comfortable as big givers.
- Focus congregation’s vision on the case statement of what you want to do, what is important and why it’s important.
- Avoid the need for financial crisis management by having fundraisers in the earliest part of your fiscal year.

Reclaiming Judaism After Centuries Underground
The mountain town of Serrastretta in the Calabria region of southern Italy is not an obvious place to find a synagogue, let alone a Reconstructionist one. But beneath the Catholic surface of this remote community lies a surprising Jewish legacy: Many families are descended from b’nei anusim, Jews who underwent forced conversion to Catholicism during the Inquisition.

Who Is A Reconstructionist Jew?
(Interested in more on Reconstructionist Judaism? Visit Reconstructionism.)
A Reconstructionist Jew has strong commitments both to tradition and to the search for contemporary meaning. Reconstructionists encourage all Jews to enhance their own lives by reclaiming our shared heritage and becoming active participants in the building of the Jewish future.

Tzedakah and the Jewish Holidays
(With thanks to the Shefa Fund - whose successor organization, Jewish Funds for Justice, has become part of Bend The Arc - for the idea for this piece.)
For centuries, giving to tzedakah has been a traditional way to mark Jewish holidays. But all holidays are not created equal. In this resource, we offer connections between the theme of each holiday or season, and some possible giving opportunities that correspond with it.

Perhaps You Belong in a Reconstructionist Community
“To be a Jew means first belonging to the group…” - Mordecai Kaplan
Thriving within a Jewish framework
“I like belonging to a Reconstructionist synagogue, because it means I’m a member of a warm and supportive community. I felt comfortable getting involved right from the beginning. I know that what I say and do makes a difference.”

What Are You Asking For?
(A guided meditation on Psalm 27, from God Loves the Stranger: Stories, Poems, Prayers)
One thing I ask of Adonai, only that do I seek.
Imagine if you could ask one thing of Adonai.
Imagine if reality, life, all the power and resources in existence could grant you one thing and one thing alone.
(Pause) Take a few deep belly breaths.
For this moment let your thoughts float freely.
What would it be?

Optimism Poem
More and more I have come to admire resilience.
Not the simple resistance of a pillow, whose foam
returns over and over to the same shape, but the sinuous
tenacity of a tree: finding the light newly blocked on one side,
it turns in another. A blind intelligence, true.
But out of such persistence arose turtles, rivers,
mitochondria, figs—all this resinous, unretractable earth.—Jane Hirshfield

Guide to Free Media Publicity
Introduction
The goal of this document is to provide synagogues with guidance regarding how to obtain publicity that will enhance their outreach efforts. All this information will be useful for publicizing other aspects of synagogue life as well. By publicity, we mean non-paid editorial mention, whether it be an announcement, a photo, a feature story on radio or TV.
