  1. Brief Asking Federal Court to Reverse Ruling Allowing Strip Searches of Female Inmates As Training Exercise

Reconstructing Judaism and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Assocation joined an amicus brief in Henry v. Hulett submitted by Muslim Advocates,  asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit to re-hear and reverse a ruling that found that staff at an Illinois prison did not violate the Constitution when they forced female inmates to engage in a deeply humiliating and dehumanizing strip search as part of a training exercise.

  2. Statement by Congregation Dor Hadash on Justice Department Decision to Seek Death Penalty

Yesterday, we learned that the U.S. Justice Department will seek the death penalty against the suspected shooter in the 2018 mass shooting that devastated three congregations and rocked the entire North American Jewish community.

Reconstructing Judaism is proud to share this moving statement from our Pittsburgh affiliate, Congregation Dor Hadash. And we note that Jewish tradition is weighted heavily against the use of the death penalty.

  3. HEAL act endorsement

Reconstructing Judaism endorses the Health Equity and Access under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Women and Families Act of 2019. Under the act, immigrants in the United States can participate in the health care programs their billions of tax dollars support. By ensuring that all immigrants can access affordable coverage for which they are otherwise eligible, this bill will allow immigrant women and their families to receive the health care they need, and create healthier communities and a stronger economy.

A fact sheet on the bill can be found here:

Reconstructing Judaism joined 430 human rights, civil rights, faith, and professional organizations, leaders, and scholars in an open letter expressing deep concern about the State Department’s recently announced Commission on Unalienable Rights. The signers object to the Commission’s stated purpose, which they believe is harmful to the global effort to protect the rights of all people.

The main body of the letter is appended below. The attached PDF contains the full letter with footnotes, and a complete list of signatories.

  7. Loving the Stranger

“Loving the stranger” and “welcoming the stranger” are not always equivalent. How can we go out of our way to help those who are unfamiliar to us?

  9. Beyond the Kingdom: Transforming God Imagery

A brilliant homily for Rosh Hashanah that queers the biblical texts and suggests that there are many allusions in the Bible to the ambiguous, nonbinary gender identity of God.
