  1. Finding Grace in Parenthood

Jonah Itai Staub, our grandson, emerged on Friday at 6:45 a.m. At 6:52, we received the text from our son Andrew: “Baby is here! Everyone is healthy.” This coming Friday, little Jonah will be circumcised into the covenant of Abraham.

  2. Holding Ourselves Accountable

    Can virtuous behavior be taught?

I have had my doubts. Of course, parents do their best to instill their values in their children. In retrospect, however, it seems to me as if I learned from the way my parents lived their lives rather than from any values that they tried to teach me. I would say the same thing about how my own children have turned out. If they are honest or kind, it is not because their parents or religious school teachers told them that honesty or kindness are good, but rather because there were people in their lives who have modeled honesty or kindness.

  5. Statement Responding to Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

The Reconstructionist movement celebrates the Supreme Court decision on Obergefell v. Hodges, ruling marriage equality for our country. We are kvelling that all couples will be seen as equal in our nation. Gay and lesbian couples now have the same rights, responsibilities and benefits as heterosexual couples. As important is the dignity this new status confers on all same-sex couples. We are in awe of the many acts, known and unknown, that brought us to this very place, a shehechiyanu moment indeed.

  7. Statement on May 2017 Terrorist Attacks

RRC/Jewish Reconstructionist Communities and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association are shocked and aggrieved by today’s terrorist attack on a bus carrying a group of Egyptian Coptic Christians to visit the Monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor in Minya province, south of Cairo. Masked gunmen killed at least 28 worshipers, including children, and wounded at least 20 more people. As of this moment no group has claimed responsibility, but this attack follows a series of recent attacks on the Coptic Christian community in Egypt.

  8. Camp JRF Name Change Release

    Dear Friends,

    Today’s the day!

As you know, we’ve been talking for years about changing the name of Camp JRF. Now that our namesake no longer exists as an umbrella organization (as it did when we opened), with a second camp on the horizon, and with excitement that the Reconstructionist movement is currently undertaking a similar process, the time has finally come.

And so, without any further ado, we’re excited to share with you our new name, logo, and tagline:

  9. Co-signed Hazon letter on withdrawal from Paris climate accord

To leaders within the American Jewish Community:

    Dear Friends,

We are Jews, organizational leaders and rabbis, teachers and students who work passionately towards a bright American Jewish future.

We are also human beings who care deeply about all life.

And from this integrated Jewish and universal perspective, we are shocked by our President’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord.

  10. Statement on June 14 Shooting

We are deeply shocked by the shooting that targeted members of Congress and others, and we’re praying for a complete and swift recovery for those injured. Based on reports, were it not for the work of Capitol Police officers, the casualties could have been far more numerous and we applaud the actions of all who saved lives. Though the motivations of the shooter are not yet known, this violent act represents a further breakdown in our political culture. Those who seek office in service of their country should not have to fear for their lives. No one should.
