  3. Harold Schulweis

    Rabbi Harold Schulweis z”l (1924-2014) was longtime spiritual leader of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, California. A public intellectual and social activist, Schulweis studied under Mordecai Kaplan at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was considered to be a pivotal Reconstructionist voice. He was an early advocate of the Havurah movement, and argued for radical inclusion of those traditionally deemed outsiders in the synagogue, such as interfaith families and gay and lesbian Jews.

    Michael Strassfeld is a 1991 graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. He is the rabbi emeritus of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism, the Reconstructionist synagogue in Manhattan founded by Mordecai Kaplan. He is the author of A Book of Life: Embracing Judaism as a Spiritual Practice and is one of the co-editors of the Jewish Catalog.

    Brianna was born and raised in South Florida and has spent many of her summers at her second home, Camp Havaya. She attended Brandeis University where she majored in psychology and Near Eastern and Judaic studies; she then continued studying at the Jewish Theological Seminary, earning her master’s degree in Jewish experiential education. Brianna has been a camper, counselor, and rosh eidah (unit head) at Camp Havaya (then Camp JRF), and was very involved in No’ar Hadash. She loves dancing outside Friday night, hiking to the waterfall, and playing Ultimate Frisbee at Camp.
