  1. New Approach to Shabbat Practice (Schwartz)

Congregation B'nai Israel in Willimantic, Connecticut underwent a long communal Reconstructionist process to decide on congregational rules for Shabbat practice. This newsletter article documents that process, and explains the values weighed and the eventual outcome that was reached. This document can serve as an exemplar for Values Based Decision Making on other topics as well.

  4. A Version of Israel's Secular Shabbat -- Via a Song

The song below, Shabbat Ba’boker can be found on Arik Einstein and Yoni Richter’s CD , “When I Was a Kid.” It is a Shabbat song with no reference to ritual or practice. In a way that only an Israeli song can express, it communicates a deep sense of how joyous Sabbath can be. It is upbeat and jazzy.

  7. Reconstructing for Tomorrow 11/7/17 First Session

There’s been a tension throughout our history between understanding Reconstructionism as an approach to being Jewish, a set of questions, a set of processes, a set of conversations. Reconstructionism as an organizational structure embodies those questions, those processes, those conversations.

In the last several weeks, two experiences, both of them ongoing, have made clear to me the power and persistency of “gathering” as a lynchpin of building and sustaining a spiritual community within the Reconstructionist movement. By “gathering,” I mean physically gathering—being together at the same time, in the same place, for one another and with one another.
