  1. Creating Radically Welcoming Communities

On June 30, 2021, Rabbi Sandra Lawson (she/her) led a racial justice workshop called Creating Radically Welcoming Communities. This workshop was part of a series of racial justice workshops called Looking within for Communical Change, organized and produced by Philadelphia’s Center City Kehillah. Reconstructing Judaism proudly co-sponsored Rabbi Lawson’s workshop with the Jewish Federation of Philadelphia and the Board of Rabbis of Greater Philadelphia.

  3. Call for Commission Nominations 2021

    Dear members of Reconstructionist communities,

The two active commissions of the Reconstructionist movement – the Tikkun Olam Commission (TOC) and the Joint Israel Commission (JIC) – are seeking nominees to fill several seats on each commission. Beginning this year, a request for nominations will go out every year. Terms begin September 1st and last for three years with the option to apply for a second term. Both commissions onboard new members in staggered stages so there are openings for new folks each year.

  5. Mandate for Tikkun Olam Commission

    BACKGROUND

By Resolution dated April 22, 2018, The Board of Governors of Reconstructing Judaism (the Board) approved the establishment of the Tikkun Olam Commission (TOC) as a joint commission of Reconstructing Judaism and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA).

In addition, two co-chairs were selected to form and lead the TOC: one lay leader invited by the Board (Angela Milstein of Kehillat Israel in Pacific Palisades) and one rabbinic leader invited by the RRA (Rabbi Renee Bauer, RRC ’05).

  6. Jews of Color and Allies Advisory Group Mandate

    Background and objectives:

WHEREAS Jews of Color (JOC) comprise at least 12-15 percent of the American Jewish community yet are often marginalized and discriminated against in mainstream Jewish settings, Reconstructing Judaism must take further action to ensure that our Jewish communities provide a safe, supportive, loving and empowering haven for all of us, most especially Jews of Color.

“Love of the Creator, and love of that which G!d has created, are finally one and the same,” wrote Martin Buber.  Defending this divine creation in an era of climate change is a Jewish (and social, political, and moral) imperative.  A rich Jewish life is by nature an environmental one, though we need to pick up the pace, draw more explicit connections, and make our community a beacon of sustainability.
