    Greetings Edtalkers,

This is Vicki from B’nai Havurah in Denver, Colorado. I am on the Children’s High Holiday Programming committee. I have been involved with this committee on and off for about the last 8 years. I am currently asking for your input on what your synagogue does/offers for youth, grades kindergarten through 6th or 7th grade (B’nai Mitzvah) during the Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur Services.

  5. Making Decisions on Controversial Issues

Every congregation (or havurah) faces disagreements, in which particular individuals or sub-groups feel compelled to challenge the status quo. While these disputes are often resolved amicably, they can also result in individuals feeling a need to leave the group, or in some instances, a group of individuals feeling a need to start a new group based on the point of conflict. None of these results is necessarily bad or wrong. But there are times when such disagreements create a negative atmosphere and hurt feelings that never heal.

  6. Introduction to Reconstructionist Educators' FAQs

Click here to read the FAQs themselves.

What is going on in a child’s mind when they ask a question? Rabbi Harold Kushner tells the amusing story of the parent who wanted to provide sophisticated theological answers to his five-year-old son who had asked about God. The father explained how God wasn’t really a person, but was instead a spirit, a miraculous presence. A few minutes later the five-year-old came back to his father and said, “I got it. God is like Casper the Friendly Ghost.”

  7. Synagogue Membership As a Requirement For Religious School Enrollment

This listserv thread from November 2001 still contains valuable discussion on congregational policy.

    Jeff Steinberg, Toronto, Ontario

I sit on our Hebrew school committee, which is currently reviewing a policy of the congregation. The policy requires congregational membership after one year's enrollment in the school. The school, in effect, serves a membership gathering function.

  9. Fuller Aleynu For Siddur Kol Ha'Noar

Siddur Kol Hano'ar uses a truncated version of the Aleynu prayer. This fuller version uses Reconstructionist wording and can be pasted into Siddur Kol Hano'ar. It is available with and without transliteration.

Print the pdfs onto labels and cut them to size. Peel off the backs and paste the labels onto pages 34 and 82.
