  1. Tzedakah and the Jewish Holidays

(With thanks to the Shefa Fund - whose successor organization, Jewish Funds for Justice, has become part of Bend The Arc - for the idea for this piece.)

For centuries, giving to tzedakah has been a traditional way to mark Jewish holidays. But all holidays are not created equal. In this resource, we offer connections between the theme of each holiday or season, and some possible giving opportunities that correspond with it.

    Greetings Edtalkers,

This is Vicki from B’nai Havurah in Denver, Colorado. I am on the Children’s High Holiday Programming committee. I have been involved with this committee on and off for about the last 8 years. I am currently asking for your input on what your synagogue does/offers for youth, grades kindergarten through 6th or 7th grade (B’nai Mitzvah) during the Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur Services.

  5. Toddlers Turn On to Torah

How can you delight two- and three-year-olds with chanting Torah in ancient melodies called trope? How do you pull them into the storyline, and get them to call out questions and jump out of their seats at the end of each section to shout Hazak! Hazak! Venithazek! (Be strong! Be strong! And may we be strengthened), as if it were a chorus from the latest Disney blockbuster? Rabbi Marisa Elana James did just that as a rabbinical student during her year as director of programming at a congregation in New York City.
