  2. Finding Forgiveness

We hear about forgiveness every year at the High Holy Days. We seek God’s forgiveness in shul from Selihot through the final prayers of Yom Kippur.

Vicki Phillips, B’nai Havurah, Denver, CO

    Greetings Edtalkers,

This is Vicki from B’nai Havurah in Denver, Colorado. I am on the Children’s High Holiday Programming committee. I have been involved with this committee on and off for about the last 8 years. I am currently asking for your input on what your synagogue does/offers for youth, grades kindergarten through 6th or 7th grade (B’nai Mitzvah) during the Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur Services.

  7. Recon Torah Oct 2015

We’ve just finished the High Holidays. For many of us, this was a time to reflect once again upon the themes of remembrance, renewal and the awesome transcendence of the universe. It was also the time when we encountered, once again, the story of Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Isaac, along with the greatest hits, once again, of the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur liturgy.

  8. God in Metaphor

For many people, attending High Holydays services is a bit like going to a play where you really don't like the main character—where, much of the time, you doubt the very existence of the main character! If the “main character” in our traditional High Holydays liturgy is God, this can be quite a problem for anyone seeking a meaningful spiritual experience.

  9. What Are You Asking For?

(A guided meditation on Psalm 27, from God Loves the Stranger: Stories, Poems, Prayers)

One thing I ask of Adonai, only that do I seek.

Imagine if you could ask one thing of Adonai.

Imagine if reality, life, all the power and resources in existence could grant you one thing and one thing alone.

(Pause) Take a few deep belly breaths.

For this moment let your thoughts float freely.

    What would it be?
